Back to School Shopping in 2023

Did you know?

The back-to-school shopping season is the second-largest shopping season – just behind Black Friday and Christmas. In fact, roughly 60% of all Q3 sales are directly tied to back-to-school shoppers!

Consumer Behavior in an Inflationary Environment

The price of everyday necessities has steadily increased since 2020. That means consumers are reacting to these higher prices by switching to cheaper alternatives, searching for coupons, and purchasing a different brand than they would normally. As you probably know, inflation and higher prices are very much top of mind for consumers this year. The struggle for most Americans isn’t that these school supplies cost so much more, but that just about everything else does. People are dealing with higher grocery and gas prices and for back to school, they know that budgeting will be crucial.

Where do people buy school supplies?

According to the National Retail Federation, online shopping remains a top choice for both back-to-school (48%) and back-to-college shoppers (43%). While mass merchant stores will get the bulk of the business, shoppers are starting their back-to-school shopping much earlier than before, and they’re looking for better deals online.

Now is the time to start planning for
a successful back-to-school shopping season

Stationery is one of the most popular categories for e-Commerce stores. From envelopes to pencils and rubber bands, stationery products are a daily necessity which means shoppers will add an array of these items to meet cart minimums for certain money-saving promotions (such as free shipping). On top of that, stationery products are relatively inexpensive and offer a low price point.
